One cat rescued in blaze still being investigated

By Kate Croxton / Times-News

A house fire on North Ireland Street ended with a family of four holding their one surviving cat while two other cats were found dead.

Burlington firefighters responded to a call of a house fire about noon Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 408 N. Ireland St. Smoke and fire were coming from the front part of the house, Battalion Chief Brad Bailey said.

“They made entry,” Bailey said. “They did find a room with a fire that extended a little into the house, into the attic. All the human occupants were out of the house when they arrived.”

A neighbor said the family was outside when the fire was noticed.

The fire department was able to extinguish the fire, and while they were taking a break, a large fan was used to push the heat, smoke and toxic gas out of the structure to make it easier for the firefighters to go back inside and check the house, Bailey said.

The fan also exposed a hidden fire. The firefighters cut a hole in the roof to access the hotspot and extinguish the hidden fire.

The Fire Department did not know the cause of the fire Tuesday afternoon.

While all four human occupants escaped the fire, two of the three house cats did not. The firefighters were able to save one cat, which was alive when found.

“They brought that cat out,” Bailey said. “We administered some oxygen to the cat. The homeowner got the cat, and she has been giving the cat oxygen and I think the cat is doing pretty good.”

The other two cats were found dead.

“We have retrieved those animals for the homeowners, and we have got them in an area and they are going to bury them,” Bailey said.

Bailey said the Red Cross was notified and was on its way to assist the family.

“We are fortunate that nobody was hurt here,” Bailey said. “We hate to lose the animals. It is never good for something like this to happen anytime, especially at Christmas. I think these folks will be fine and they will bounce back.”

More than 8500 cats were surrendered to Perth’s busiest cat shelter last year due to an increase in people parting with their pet due to economic hardship and homelessness.

Cat Haven in Shenton Park says it rescued 1865 more cats last year than in the previous seven years combined.

Cat Haven representative Chandra Woodley said much of the increase was due to “owner surrenders”, with 1000 more cats handed in than came from metropolitan council rangers.

She said the key reason given by more than 900 people was economic hardship or moving interstate or overseas.

“The figures have doubled in those who are homeless and can no longer keep a cat,” she said.

Cat Haven also saw a jump in people surrendering their pets due to moving to nursing homes or apartments, where pets were not allowed.

It accepted about 1000 animals from regional rescue groups as far north as Karratha and south to Esperance, indicating an increase in dumped cats statewide.

However the shelter managed to find homes for a record 6438 happy felines.

They also managed to keep their euthanasia rate down to 12.5 per cent.

But the shelter said its funding had been stretched to the limit.

“We desperately need more government or corporate assistance or we simply can’t carry on,” Ms Woodley said.

A care guide for pothos plants almost seems redundant because they are so very easy to keep alive. Seriously, if you only water them when they start to look wilty, you’ll have them for years. However, if you want to take the best care of them so they’re the happiest and healthiest they can be, here are our best tips.

Pothos vs Philodendron

First off, make sure you’ve got a pothos plant vs. a heartleaf philodendron. They are both vining plants that look similar. The biggest difference is that pothos have larger, thicker leaves and grooved stems. Philodendron leaves tend to be darker and less likely to be variegated. But, they have very similar requirements for water, light and care.

Pothos Plant Care

Pothos do well in a wide variety of light conditions and are therefore an excellent option for even low-light homes. In fact, try to avoid direct sunlight. Interesting fact, courtesy of Gardening Know How: a variegated pothos placed in low-light conditions may lose some of its white color because only the green part of the leaf can absorb light. On the other hand, if you notice that your pothos’ leaves look paler than usual, that’s a sign that your plant is getting too much light.

Soil and Water

Pothos plants don’t actually have to be planted in soil; they do very well just placed in a container with water. If you do decide to plant them in soil, any potting mix is fine. Be aware that a plant that’s gotten used to being in just water may not do too well if transferred to soil.

When it comes to watering, pothos do best when their soil is allowed to dry out between waterings. As with any plant, watch leaves for signs of the plant’s well-being: if the leaves are glossy, green, and perky, the plant is happy; if they’re wilting or turning brown, you’re not watering enough. Yellow leaves are a sign of over-watering and root-rot. Don’t let soil sit constantly wet.

Pothos Vine

Naturally, pothos plants are trailers, and many people enjoy them for this characteristic. My mother has a gorgeous pothos that trails gracefully from the top of a grandfather clock. As trailers, they are also great indoor hanging plants or placed up high on shelves.

However, if left un-pruned, pothos can become too leggy. Pinching back stems at the tips ensures that your plant doesn’t become too thin and stringy. You can even put clippings into the same pot to help your pothos get more full.

Pothos are available for purchase on Amazon. Buy a 6″ planter for $16.28 with free Prime shipping.

Propagating Pothos

Propagating pothos is extremely easy. It’s one of those plants you can just pinch a leaf and node from and hand to a friend. If they stick it in soil or water to root, soon they’ll have a pothos plant of their own. Pothos plants can also be easily divided when re-potting to produce new plants.

A Note on Toxicity

Though rarely fatal, ingesting pothos can cause vomiting and irritation in pets and children.

Cats do a lot of adorably bizarre things that simultaneously enrich our lives and wreak havoc upon them. But perhaps their strangest behavior is a phenomenon the internet has correctly described as “blepping.” An animal behavior consultant tells Inverse there’s actual science behind it.

What is a blep, you say? While you might not know the origin of the word — because, well, no one does — you definitely know what it looks like. It’s when a cat (or dog) sticks his or her tongue out, then forgets to put it away. The results are pretty phenomenal:

— lvl45 CHAOS POTUS who thinks he has ‘great Energy’ (@thetomzone) March 14, 2018

Animal behavior consultant and cat expert Amy Shojai says blepping is actually connected with the way cats investigate their surroundings.

“Cats use all senses to explore the world, including taste,” she tells Inverse. “The Flehmen response (mouth agape) collects pheromones on the tongue and transfers them to the roof of the mouth to an internal ‘scent mechanism’ (vomeronasal organ) to detect sexual status or other info about other cats. So ‘forgetting’ to retract the tongue in these instances might be due to fascination or distraction while deciphering these kitty “Post-It” notes!”

Basically, blepping is the face cats make when they’re being floofy detectives. That is literal science, and I will accept no arguments.

“When a cat displays the Flehman response, she’s basically analyzing a particular scent,” Pam Johnson-Bennett, a certified cat behavior consultant, confirms to PetMD. “It’s used primarily for analyzing pheromones from other cats, especially the ones found in urine, but a cat will use it for other interesting scents that require more thorough investigation, too.”

— Cara Lee (@caralytic) March 14, 2018

Since cats are furry geniuses, they can learn over time that blepping makes their humans happy.

“If people reward the accidental behavior with petting, sweet talk, and treats, that predicts a repeat of the behavior in the future,” Shojai tells Inverse. “Cats learn really quickly what works to get what they want!”

Seems like a win-win to us: cats get treats, and we get this:

— internerd (@keirsmith) March 14, 2018

— Fatwans (@fatwans) March 14, 2018

— Michæl 🐩 (@itsamemikey) March 14, 2018

— LucyFur the Cat (@LucyFurTweets) March 14, 2018

— A Cat Named Bitches (@BitchestheCat) March 14, 2018

— John Arnst (@ArnstJohn) March 14, 2018

In short, the true definition of a blep is “that thing cats do when they’re trying to investigate a new scent and become suddenly distracted, leaving their tongues out.” You’re welcome, internet.

AUSSIE RULES: It could be the win that kick-starts the Brothers Bulldogs in this year’s AFL Wide Bay season.

The side recorded just its second win of the season against Gympie on Saturday afternoon at Brothers Sports Complex.

But only after they were forced to fight back from a poor first quarter.

Gympie scored eight goals to one to be up by 46 points at the first change before Brothers fought back.

The Dogs kicked 14 of the next 18 goals to move into fourth spot on the ladder with the 12-point win.

“To come back from playing some of our worst footy to then bouncing back and playing our best footy was a great result,” Dogs coach Luke Sicker said.

“It was a very good win for the club.”

Sicker said nothing needed to be said at quarter time.

He said Gympie had an advantage with the wind but that didn’t give them the lead.

“The wind was not an excuse. We had no effort and didn’t come ready to play,” Sicker said.

“We were led by a few in the midfield (and) that got us back into the game.”

The victory puts the Bulldogs one game clear of Gympie on the ladder and on track for finals.

Sicker said the win could galvanise the club towards finishing in the top four.

“It definitely has the potential,” he said.

“On the flip side it could have done the opposite so it was good for it not to happen.

“For us this is the first time in a game we have overrun our opposition, so that was the most pleasing part.”

Sicker said midfielders Ash Rendell and Dylan Keam starred.

The Bulldogs face Bay Power this weekend.

A 45-YEAR-OLD man has been convicted of animal neglect charges after he and his 21-year-old partner left 11 dogs, two cats and three birds in “revolting” living conditions at a Calliope camping ground.

Many of the animals were kept in cramped cages without access to food or water while the couple drove to Brisbane in June 2016.

By the time they were recovered by the RSPCA, most of the animals were severely underweight, riddled with fleas and suffering from other medical conditions.

A chihuahua, named Aldi, was found underneath an upturned milk carton under the couple’s trailer, while a bull mastiff named Major had to be euthanised due to an untreated perineal hernia.

The rest of the animals have since been rehomed.

Paul John Bougoure, 45, and Ashlee Gina Thackeray, 21, each pleaded guilty to 17 charges of breaching their duty of care to an animal at Gladstone Magistrates Court this morning.

Bougoure, who had already been banned for life from owning animals, also pleaded guilty to breaching that prohibition order.

The animals were found after a council worker was called to the Calliope River Rest Area on June 9, 2016, to catch one of the dogs which had escaped its tether.

Council officers returned the next day with the RSPCA Inspector and recovered the animals, providing them with water and taking them for vet assessments.

Bougoure and Thackeray were not at the camp when they arrived.

When Thackeray was contacted she admitted the animals were in a poor condition and she was aware some did not have water.

She was initially reluctant to surrender the animals to the RSPCA, but the next day agreed to deliver them and gave consent for Major to be euthanised.

RSPCA lawyer Jordan Ahlstrand told Gladstone Magistrates Court the manner in which the animals had been cared for was “appalling”.

He said Bougoure had a history of animal offences, including one conviction of having sex with a horse.

Bougoure’s lawyer Tom Polley told the court his client had had a “hard and strict upbringing” at the hands of his father.

He said the couple were “living hard financially” at the time of the offences, as they were in the process of relocating from their house in Bajool to Bargara.

The court was told the couple were only intending to stay in Calliope for a short period of time, and the trip to Brisbane was only meant to last 12 hours.

However, Bougoure was arrested on an unrelated matter when they arrived in Brisbane, causing Thackeray to remain away from the camping ground for two more nights.

Thackeray’s lawyer Rio Ramos told the court her client was remorseful for the “unfortunate incident” and accepted “she could have done better.”

She said her client was “very passionate about animals” and wanted to find work with stock dogs as it was “the only thing she’s ever known”.

Magistrate Catherine Benson said Thackeray might consider it an unfortunate incident but the reality was the animals had been uncared for for a lengthy period of time.

“It’s not a situation where you are being charged and sentenced only for leaving animals for a few days,” Ms Benson said.

“You need to have a whole new attitude towards the care and protection of animals if that’s the career (you would like to) have.”

Thackeray was sentenced to 18 months’ probation and banned from owning any animals for two years, with no conviction recorded due to her age and early guilty plea.

Turning her attention to Bougoure, Ms Benson said he had “thumbed (his) nose” at the court by defying a lifetime prohibition order that had already been already in place at the time of the offending.

She sentenced him to six months in prison, suspended for two years, and said the only reason he would not serve actual time in custody was the amount of time that had passed since his last similar conviction.

Bougoure also received a two month sentence for breaching the prohibition order, suspended for two years and to be served concurrently with the six-month sentence, as well as a second lifetime prohibition order.

Both Bougoure and Thackeray were ordered to pay the legal and operations costs incurred by the RSPCA.

Speaking after the conclusion of the case, RSPCA Regional Inspector Clare Gordon said the decision was a good outcome, calling the animals’ living conditions “revolting”.

“Definitely a serious case that we hope not to see very often,” she said.

“This job came up when I’d only been in the position for two weeks – it was a real eye-opener to me.

“The animals’ conditions were terrible. They were emaciated, they were anemic, they were riddled with fleas (and) hookworm.

“To be given a life prohibition order, the courts don’t do that lightly. So he has serious offendings prior to this, and then he’s continued to do it.”

‘Amit A Shah’s sharp vilification can be interpreted as a sign of nervousness in the saffron camp,’ says Amulya Ganguli.

Amit A Shah’s against the BJP’s opponents — calling them dogs, cats, snakes, etc — cannot but gladden the party’s hordes of foul-mouthed trolls.

They will see in the BJP president a person after their own heart who shares their vicious outlook where anti-national, anti-Hindu, elements are concerned.

However, neither Amit A Shah nor a common garden variety saffron troll is an oddity, for diatribes of this nature have long been a part of a Sangh Parivar tradition.

Before the age of the Internet, Sanghis used to send postcards or inland letters to their critics, generally advising them to migrate to Pakistan and asking whether they allow their female relatives to entertain lascivious Muslims.

Amit A Shah, therefore, can be said to be adhering to an established Hindutva custom.

How effective his vituperative outburst will be in convincing voters outside the BJP’s committed followers to reject these purported denizens of the animal world in the political field is not known.

But the sharp vilification can also be interpreted as a sign of nervousness in the saffron camp.

There was another occasion when a similar sense of unease on the eve of the Gujarat assembly election had induced the prime minister to dub his predecessor a traitor for conspiring with Pakistan along with the former vice-president and a former army chief.

Again, it is not known how many people in Narendra D Modi’s home province had been persuaded to vote against the party of the conspirators.

But the fact that the BJP fell well behind in the number of seats in the assembly from Amit A Shah’s predicted figure of 150 suggests that Modi was not as widely believed as his party may have wished.

Similarly, the BJP’s supporters may wonder whether Amit Shah’s abuses will prove to be counterproductive since the coarse utterances militate against the claims of a party to be an admirer and follower of ‘Bharatiya sanskriti‘.

It is noteworthy that the BJP chief made these remarks while speaking in Mumbai on the occasion of the party’s 38th foundation day, for the Maximum City is the home of the Shiv Sena which is also not known for restrained behaviour.

As is known, the Shiv Sena’s favourite ploy is to blacken the faces of those it does not like or even beat them up as an MP did on an Air India flight when a hapless employee questioned his conduct.

One of the reasons why the BJP believes it has succeeded in ousting the Shiv Sena from its No 1 position in Maharashtra is the perception in the state, and especially in Mumbai, that members of the party of Narendra D Modi and Amit A Shah are not ruffians like those of its ally.

Amit Shah’s vitriol may induce a rethinking on this count.

The Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena are also likely to be taken aback by this insolent usurpation of their prerogative to use foul language.

Will the Congress gain?

Will Rahul Gandhi be able to persuade his followers to adhere to his advice to love the enemy — turn the other cheek! — in the face of such uninhibited attacks?

Will the RSS wonder whether ‘Bharatiya sanskriti‘ is in danger from its own kind?

The answer, as they say, is blowing in the wind.

OLYMPIA, Wash. –  Investigators are looking into what could be a disturbing case of serial animal abuse after four cats were found mutilated in three Washington state cities.

The mangled bodies were found in Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater, and investigators say the circumstances were similar to what happened in Port Angeles where a cat was found cut in half and left near a playground.

Since February, Thurston County Law Enforcement say someone, or a group of people, have intentionally mutilated four cats, leaving the bodies to be discovered in public places.

Officer Erika Johnson, an Animal Cruelty Services investigator with Thurston County says the first two incidents happened near the 1400 block of Clearbrook Drive Southeast in Lacey. Then, nearly six months later, two more incidents occurred. Johnson says these incidents happened near Tumwater Airport and in Decatur Park.

“The animals were put on display after their deaths in a very public place,” Johnson told KCPQ. “That means they were left out in the open for people to find; intentionally,” she added.

She says they know it’s a person doing this to the cats. The cuts on the animals are too clean to be an accident, and Johnson says in one instance they found a surgical glove next to the body of the dead cat.

“This is not normal and it’s very sick behavior,” she said.

Wednesday Johnson had the difficult job of notifying one of the families that their missing cat was not only killed but killed intentionally by a human.

“I said, ‘what caused this? Did it get hit by a car?’ They said, ‘no.’ I said, ‘did an animal like a raccoon or a coyote or anything?’ And they said ‘no.’ Then they said, ‘this was done by a human.’ Then it dawned on me, something bad happened to my cat,” said Patrick Swan

For weeks, Swan says he held out hope that it wasn’t his cat the Olympia Animal Services found. He says after seeing the pictures, he knew it was his cat, Callie, that had been killed.

“It’s been a challenge every morning. We call the cats in, and only one comes,” said Swan.

Swan says they adopted Callie from the Olympia Animal Services two years ago, and he and his wife never would expect they would be back so soon, especially for this reason.

“Why would someone want to do this to a pet,” he said.

Now, Swan and his wife have to go home and explain to their three daughters what happened to Callie.

The Swans say they’re sharing their story to hopefully make a difference.

“This is for a bigger cause. To help find this person, and to help other families prevent this from happening again,” said Angi Swan

“My fear is, if you’re going to do cats, what’s next?” said Patrick Swan.

Johnson says she’s determined not to let it come to that.

“I hold these people accountable. And if I don’t know who this person is, I make it my mission,” she said.

Johnson asks pet owners in Thurston County to be extra vigilant with their animals.

If you have any information,  contact the Thurston County Animal Services at (360) 352-2510. In the Port Angeles case, there is a $5,000 reward being offered.
